Roach droppings: pepper specks, ridges, and mouse lookalikes
German roaches leave pepper-like specks and smears in cabinet tracks. Larger species leave ridged pellets with blunt ends. Mouse pellets are smoother and usually pointed.
You are probably staring into a cabinet corner with a flashlight. Decide insect frass or rodent pellets first. The next twenty minutes of searching the house go in opposite directions.
Cornell’s NYS IPM program puts it in inspection order. If the pellets are from rodents, you look for grease trails, gnaw marks, and how they got in. If they are from cockroaches, you look for moisture, decaying food film, and tight harborage: hinge gaps, motor housings, plumbing voids.
This page is a field check. It will not name a species from a phone photo. Start at the pest droppings guide if you are still choosing insect vs rodent, or the identification hub if you have live insects instead of specks.
The ridge test
Cockroaches, like other insects, pass waste over rectal pads that pull water back out of the pellet. Those pads leave lengthwise ridges. Rodent pellets are relatively smooth. Many mouse pellets taper to a point. Under a hand lens they can also show swallowed hair from grooming.
University of Nebraska’s house-mouse chapter records the overlap that fools people:
| Cockroach frass | House mouse pellets | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Ridges; ends often squared or blunt | Smooth; ends often pointed or tapered |
| Length (typical) | About 1/8 to 1/4 inch for larger indoor species; German spots are much smaller | About 1/4 inch |
| Extra clue | May smear into ink-like stains on vertical surfaces | May contain hair; usually stays as a dry pellet |
German cockroaches rarely leave a tidy “pellet” you can roll between fingers. NC State Extension describes their feces as clusters of tiny brown-to-black dots in concealed spots around food prep. People call that pepper or coffee grounds because that is what it looks like on a white shelf.
If the specks smear when you press a dry paper towel, you are closer to German activity than to a mouse runway. If you have rice-grain pellets along a baseboard with pointed ends, read mouse droppings before you buy bait stations.
Capsule-sized pellets (about 1/2 inch and up) are in rat territory. See rat droppings and mouse vs rat.
Two common indoor looks
Kitchen pepper (usually German). Dark specks packed into the upper corners of cabinets, the groove of a drawer, the rubber gasket of a fridge, or the gap beside a dishwasher. UF/IFAS lists the same map: sink and drainboard, cupboard cracks, behind drawers, pipe penetrations, loose baseboards. German cockroaches live with people. They want the kitchen and the bathroom first.
Ridged cylinders (larger species). American, Oriental, and similar “palmetto bug” types leave darker, more pellet-like droppings. Those show the ridges. You find them lower: basement, crawlspace, floor drain, water-heater closet. UF/IFAS notes that many large outdoor species do poorly once they are stuck indoors. One adult at the threshold after a storm is a different problem from pepper in every cabinet.
You still want a live insect, an egg case, or a sticky-trap catch before you spend on a German-style gel program for a basement water bug.
Where to point the flashlight
Skip the middle of the counter. Roaches rest in the dark, in a gap they can press their bodies into. UF/IFAS says an adult can use a crack about 1/16 inch wide and prefers something closer to 3/8 inch.
Work this order, and stop when you find a cluster rather than a single speck:
- Hinge side of the under-sink cabinet, then the plumbing cutout where pipes enter the wall.
- Motor and compressor area behind/under the refrigerator. Warmth plus crumbs.
- Dishwasher kickplate and the side gap toward the cabinet.
- Upper corners inside food cabinets, including the shelf track.
- Bathroom vanity, toilet-tank side of the wall, and the linen closet if it shares a wet wall.
NC State’s German list matches that: dishwasher, refrigerator, cabinets, then laundry and the coffee maker if those rooms have food and water.
A bathroom medicine cabinet can load up with specks even when the kitchen looks clean. German cockroaches use wet rooms. Put a glue board on the vanity floor for a few nights before you assume spice dust.
What is not roach frass
Coffee grounds and cracked pepper land in a pile where a container tipped. Frass follows edges: the back corner, the hinge, the sticky tape residue on a shelf paper.
Bed-bug fecal spots are also dark and can smear. They sit on mattress piping, sheet folds, and the underside of a frame, not in a dishwasher gap. If the only marks are in the sleeping area, use signs of bed bugs.
Attic insulation with scattered rice-grain pellets is a rodent job. Cockroaches are not commuting through cellulose to nest the way mice do.
Do not wipe first
UF/IFAS: cockroach feces carry an aggregation pheromone. Other roaches follow it. Vacuum the skins and feces, then scrub with hot soapy water so you are not leaving a trail for the next wave.
NC State: wear a mask and gloves when you clean fecal spots. Feces, shed skins, and saliva hold allergens. CDC’s asthma-trigger page lists cockroaches among household triggers and tells people to skip sprays and foggers because those products can set off an attack.
CDC also says to pull food and water, store food in airtight containers, keep trash closed, and seal cracks around cabinets and plumbing. That is the same sanitation UF/IFAS uses before baits, because leftover crumbs compete with the bait.
Log the room and the exact corner in the sighting log while the specks are still there. A before photo of the hinge beats a memory of “the kitchen.”
Glue boards for a 48-hour check
NC State treats glue boards as surveillance: under the sink, beside the stove, in the pantry, out of the way of kids and pets. A board with German nymphs (small, wingless, fast) in 48 hours is a stronger ID than another debate about pepper.
Oil (kitchen oil or mineral oil) is how you get a finger or a pet’s fur off the adhesive. Do not yank.
When this is the wrong tool
A single large roach at a patio door after rain, with a clean kitchen, often means an outdoor species wandered in. UF/IFAS says people overreact to those; removal and a better door sweep can be the whole job.
Daytime German cockroaches on the counter, a persistent oily odor on dishes, specks in more than one room, or anyone in the home whose asthma flares around the kitchen: that is past a one-tube bait experiment. German populations hide better than they show. NC State’s point: if you saw one, there are most likely more.
There is no cockroach slider on our cost calculator yet. Use DIY vs professional pest control for how people usually split sanitation and baits versus a licensed operator, then contact if you want help finding a local company. Typical US ranges on this site are planning bands, not quotes.
If specks come back in the same hinge after you scrub, the harborage is still occupied. Cleaning removes the pheromone. It does not remove the colony. Requirements and product labels vary; verify EPA-registered directions and local rules.
