Flying ants vs termites

Flying ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and front wings longer than the back pair. Termite swarmers have a thick waist, straight bead-like antennae, and four wings the same length.

A pile of equal-length wings on an indoor sill usually means termites already in the house. A swarm off a stump in the yard does not.

Key takeaways

  • Three checks: waist, wings, antennae. Color does not separate them.
  • Termite wings are equal and often about twice the body. Ant front wings are longer.
  • Equal-length wings in an indoor pile usually mean an infestation that warrants a licensed look.
  • A swarm from a stump or woodpile in the yard does not automatically mean the house is infested.
  • Keep a few insects in a bag. A smear on the carpet is useless.

Both insects swarm after warm rain. Shape beats the calendar.

Waist, wings, antennae

Kentucky and Mississippi State use the same three checks:

Flying antTermite swarmer
WaistPinchedThick, even
AntennaeBent, elbowedStraight, bead-like
WingsFront pair longerFour wings the same length

MSU: termite wings are about twice the body. Both insects drop their wings after the flight, so you may only have the pile. Equal-length wings on an indoor sill are the termite tell. Unequal wings on the sidewalk after rain are usually ants.

Keep a few in a clear bag. Crushing one into the carpet leaves nothing an inspector can use.

Indoor pile vs yard stump

Kentucky: swarmers coming out inside a house almost always warrant treatment. They live about a day. Vacuum them. The colony in the soil is still there.

A swarm from a stump or a woodpile out in the yard does not automatically mean the house is infested. Swarmers next to the foundation, out of a patio joint, or in a basement window are the ones that put the building on the list.

Eastern subterranean swarmers are usually dark. Formosan swarmers run tan. Ant swarmers also run tan to black. Color is a weak test. The waist is not.

Log the room and a photo next to a coin in the sighting log before you wipe the sill. Timing of the flight: when do termites swarm. Read termite treatment cost after a licensed look. Contact for a referral path. Typical US ranges, not a bid. An outdoor ant pile does not need a soil termiticide.
